Why I Wrote Fingerstyle Fitness

This ebook is the product of years of experimentation and research into fingerstyle technique. I wanted to create a guitar method book that simplified the process of learning fingerstyle into 10 simple exercises—5 for the left hand and 5 for the right hand.

I started playing guitar out of college, when I was about 22. Like most players, I began by learning to strum along with my favorite songs. However after discovering the incredible guitarist Sungha Jung, I began to focus on fingerstyle.

Those early years were rough. I spent a lot of time practicing, but I felt like I wasn’t getting much better. Most of the songs I wanted to play felt out of reach, and even relatively simple songs took me forever to learn. I began to lose hope that I’d ever be the guitarist I wanted to be.

I finally questioned my entire approach to learning guitar. Like most players, I had gotten accustomed to a certain routine without ever scrutinizing it. I took to collecting and reading all sorts of guitar method books from across different styles. I even read a number of piano and violin method books, always looking to apply that knowledge to guitar.

In the end, I discovered that my guitar approach was totally mistaken. Instead of focusing on learning songs, I needed to spend more time developing my technical chops with simple yet effective exercises. In the years since, I’ve been working to isolate the 10 exercises you’ll find in Fingerstyle Fitness

I only hope these exercises will help you as much as they’ve helped me!

Meet the author

Hi there! I’m Drew, the creator of Fingerstyle Fitness. I’m a guitarist based in Pitsburgh, PA, and I love to help other players accelerate their progress.

Because I only started playing guitar in my early twenties, I have a special interest in adult learners on the instrument. I know what it’s like to feel frustrated and discouraged in the practice room.

I’m proud to present Fingerstyle Fitness as a one-stop solution to any player’s guitar rut. These 10 exercises will whip your fingers into shape, giving you the musical freedom you’ve always wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is this ebook for?

This ebook is for beginner-intermediate level guitarists looking to learn fingerstyle. Anyone who wants to quickly develop their fingerstyle chops will benefit tremendously from these exercises!

How challenging are the exercises?

The beauty of this book is that each exercise is designed to be as easy as possible while isolating a given technique. The challenge comes not from understanding each exercise, but from dedicating the time to truly master each one.

I'm not a beginner. Is this ebook still right for me?

Yes, I think so. Fingerstyle Fitness was definitely written with newer players in mind, but virtually any guitarist will find these exercises useful. You can always improve your fundamentals, and in fact it’s often the best way to get to the next level.

Will this ebook be helpful for pick players?

Yes! Although this ebook was written for fingerstyle players, guitarists who use picks can still do all the same left-hand exercises and slightly adjust the right-hand ones for picking.

How long will I have to wait to see results?

That depends on the quality and frequency of your practicing. If you work hard, you’ll definitely see results within a few weeks, and dramatic ones within a few months. But you do need to put in the work!
